The Yankees had 12 hits, but they couldn’t convert on their many chances. Two young pitchers will square off tonight in the rubber match of this three-game series.
Kansas City has outperformed expectations by a large margin so far this year. Sean O’Sullivan has pitched brilliantly, but this will be his first outing on the road in 2011. I expect him to struggle against a Yankees lineup that is looking for revenge after last night’s poor performance.Alex Gordon was supposed to be a star a few years ago, but he struggled through his first few years in the majors. Gordon is living up to the hype this year, and that is a primary reason why the Royals are playing so well. Jeff Francoeur and Melky Cabrera are two other guys who are having surprisingly strong years at the plate.
The Yankees will likely be without Robinson Cano, who was hit in the helmet by a pitch on Wednesday night. Derek Jeter and Brett Gardner were taking a lot of heat for starting the season so slowly, but both of them are hitting the ball very well now. The Yankees have hit more home runs than anyone else in baseball, and Curtis Granderson leads the majors with 12 home runs. This is a lineup that has a solid combination of speed and power. Ivan Nova has given up just three earned runs in his last three starts. If Nova can continue to pitch well that will be a huge boost for this Yankees rotation.

I think the Yankees will get to O’Sullivan in a hurry tonight. I just don’t think he has the stuff to consistently get these New York hitters out. Nova has been solid and I think he’ll hold his own again tonight. I like the Yankees to win this one comfortably.
