Nick Saban is seen by many as one of the best coaches in college football today. Joe Paterno is 84 years and he has made a bigger imprint on the Penn State program than any other coach has made on a college program in the last several decades. Penn State hasn’t been great of late, but Happy Valley is a very difficult place to play. Can the Nittany Lions rise up against one of the top teams in the land?
Alabama
The Crimson Tide are coming off a slightly disappointing season last year. All the pieces are in place for another huge season, except they have an inexperienced starter at the quarterback spot. A.J. McCarron is the starter at quarterback for Alabama this year. McCarron had a very good high school career, but he needs to get used to the college game. He threw for 226 yards in last week’s opener, but he also threw two interceptions. Trent Richardson is an absolute beast in the backfield. You can expect Saban to give Richardson the ball a whole lot in this game.
While the Crimson Tide offense is talented, it is the defense that is dominating. Alabama is stacked with both speed and size on the defensive side of the ball. Hightower is an amazing linebacker that covers all kinds of ground. Barron is a great senior leader in the secondary. The Crimson Tide have tons of depth on the defensive line. Last week, Alabama allowed just 90 yards of total offense against Kent State.

Penn State
The Nittany Lions blasted Indiana State 41-7 last week in the season opener. Indiana State was completely outmanned, and you can’t read too much into a win over an FCS school. Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden split time in last week’s game, and it appears there is no clear cut leader at quarterback for Penn State right now. Silas Redd is a talented running back that should do well for the Nittany Lions this year. Derek Moye is one of the best wide receivers in the Big Ten. The offensive line needs to start playing some better football if this team is going to improve in 2011.
Penn State’s defense was pretty good last year, especially on their home field. The Nittany Lions secondary is extremely good. Penn State sacked the opposing quarterback just 17 times last year, but this unit was still ranked as one of the best in the country against the pass. Penn State isn’t called “Linebacker U” just for fun. This team once again has some terrific talent at linebacker. Michael Mauti is the best of the bunch, but all these linebackers know their roles very well.
Alabama vs. Penn State Free Pick: Under 42
Both offenses have far more question marks than the defenses. Alabama might have the best defense in the country, and I just can’t see them giving up too many points to Penn State. At the same time, Alabama is mainly a running team right now, and Penn State should be able to stack the box. I like the under in this one.
