Toronto Blue Jays (24-23) vs. New York Yankees (25-21) MLB Betting Odds
Moneyline: Yankees (-165) Blue Jays (+155)
Total: 8
Starting Pitchers: Blue Jays (Romero) vs. Yankees (Sabathia)
The Toronto Blue Jays had a huge sixth inning last night against Bartolo Colon and they went on to take the first game of this three-game series by a score of 7-3. Both teams will send their ace to the hill on Tuesday night when Ricky Romero takes on C.C. Sabathia. What’s the pick in this one?
Toronto is just a game and half behind the Yankees in the American League East Standings. The Blue Jays rank fifth in the majors in runs scored per game at 4.57 per contest. Jose Bautista had a breakout season in 2010 and he is absolutely proving that was no fluke based on his production this year. Bautista already has 19 home runs, and probably even more impressive is the fact that he is hitting .353. Opponents are starting to recognize what a force Bautista is, and he is beginning to get the intentional pass quite often. The Blue Jays are very aggressive on the base paths, and Rajai Davis has given them a great stolen bases guy at the top of the order.
The Yankees offense is tough to figure out so far this year. The Yankees lead the league in home runs, but they continue to struggle to pick up clutch hits with runners in scoring position. Eventually the Yankees will need to be able to manufacture some runs if they hope to avoid the slumps that have held them back so far in 2011. Curtis Granderson is second behind only Bautista with 16 home runs already this year. It seems Granderson has found his stroke after struggling most of the year in 2010. Alex Rodriguez leads the team with a .289 batting average, but it is certainly surprising that the Yankees don’t have anyone batting over .300. Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter are hitting the ball fairly well after starting the season slowly.
Blue Jays vs. Yankees Free Pick:
Under 8
John Hirschbeck is the home plate umpire in this one and historically he has one of the biggest strike zones in baseball. Sabathia has had success in the past against Toronto, and I think he’ll pitch well again. Romero is a good young left-handed pitcher, and I think he’ll keep the ball in the park quite well. I like the under in this one.
