ESPN will have a nice matchup in the desert on Friday night between two top 25 teams. The Missouri Tigers lost a lot of talent from last year, but they still have a nice team. Dennis Erickson and the Arizona State Sun Devils are looking to take a big jump in the standings this year. Which team will come out on top Friday night?
Missouri
Missouri did start off the season with win last weekend, but it definitely wasn’t pretty. The Tigers defeated Miami (OH) from the MAC by a score of 17-6. The offense looks a little different now with Blaine Gabbert gone\. James Franklin is the man under center, and he is a dual-threat quarterback. At this point in his career, Franklin would prefer to run the football. He picked up 72 yards on 14 carries last week, but he threw for only 129 yards. Missouri has some talent at the running back spot, but no one has experience. Missouri’s defense definitely took a hit when Aldon Smith left, but they still have a lot of guys who can get after the passer. The Tigers have a lot of depth on both sides of the ball, but their inexperience will probably hold them back a bit this year.

Arizona State
Arizona State walloped UC Davis 48-14 in their season opener. The Aggies are a poor team and it’s difficult to make much of anything from the Sun Devils big win in that game. The encouraging thing for Arizona State fans has to be the play of Brock Osweiler. Osweiler took over the starting job at the end of last year, and he was terrific. He understands the system very well, and he takes care of the football. Osweiler will benefit from the Sun Devils returning five receivers who had at least 20 catches a year ago. Cameron Marshall is a high quality runner who should help the Sun Devils stay balanced on offense. Arizona State’s secondary isn’t particularly strong, but I think their front seven on defense is very good.
Missouri vs. Arizona State Free Pick: Arizona State -8.5
I think this is a bad spot for the Tigers. This is a young Missouri team and they are going to be in a very hostile environment Friday night in the desert. The Sun Devils weakness is on pass defense, but I don’t think Missouri can exploit that weakness. I expect Arizona State’s balanced attack on offense to help them win this comfortably. The Sun Devils are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 home games. I like Arizona State -8.5.
