The Nittany Lions have been playing very good basketball of late. Penn State beat both Michigan State and Illinois at home, and then lost a nail-biter to Ohio State on the road. This is a team that has been playing much better over the last few weeks.
Talor Battle is the star of this team, and if they need a bucket he is the go to guy. One of the reasons the team has been so much better the last week or two is the emergence of secondary scoring options. Jeff Brooks and David Jackson have both stepped up and provided the team with assistance in the scoring department. On the negative side, Penn State has struggled defensively this season. The Nittany Lions are allowing their opponents to shoot 40.1% from beyond the arc, which is an extremely high percentage.
Purdue
The Purdue Boilermakers are without Robbie Hummel this year, but this is still a very dangerous team. Most people wrote them off when the news of Hummel was released, but Purdue has proven they can still be one of the best in the land. Having said that, the Boilers have lost two straight tough games on the road, so they need to get back on the winning track tonight.
JaJuan Johnson is a player that has developed his game immensely in his time at Purdue. Johnson is averaging 20.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this year. His shooting touch has improved drastically, and he can now knock down the deep jumper if teams play off of him. Johnson is shooting 78% from the free throw line as well, and he gets there quite often. E’Twaun Moore is the second star of this team, and he can create his own shot very well. Moore is shooting 40% from beyond the arc, and he snags six rebounds per game as well. The Boilermakers have been searching for a third option, and it seems Ryne Smith has the potential to be that third man. Smith is a great shooter and he poured in 20 points against Penn State last time around.
Penn State vs. Purdue Free Pick:
These two teams got together earlier this year and Purdue won 83-68. I don’t think this game will be nearly that high scoring, but I do believe the line of 126.5 is set too low. Purdue is a great three-point shooting team, and Penn State struggles mightily to guard beyond the arc. Talor Battle and the Nittany Lions improved offense should put up enough to push this one over as well. I think the over is the play here. Take over 126.5 in this game.
