Here we’ve got a matchup of two teams heading in different direction right now. The Thunder may be the hottest team in all of basketball. Oklahoma City has won 15 of their last 17 games overall, and 10 of their last 11. On other hand, the Suns have dropped four of their last five games. Phoenix was in a position to make a late run for the NBA playoffs just 8-10 days ago, but now they are out of the race.
The single biggest reason the Thunder have been on fire of late is their improved performance on the defensive end of the floor. Kendrick Perkins is still dinged up a bit, but when he is able to play he has proven to be an asset to this team. Russell Westbrook has emerged as one of the top point guards in the NBA. Westbrook is averaging 22 points per game, which is six points more than he averaged last year. Kevin Durant is still the leader of the team, and he can take over the game at any time.
The Suns have lost several very tough games in the last week, and it seems to have finally caught up with them. The overtime loss in Los Angeles against the Lakers was the single biggest back breaking loss this team has had. Steve Nash has had multiple injuries this year and he is unlikely to see as many minutes as normal down the stretch. Coach Alvin Gentry has said he will rest the team’s starters more than normal now that they are out of the playoff chase. Phoenix has improved a little definsively, but that is still their achilles heel.
