The Sun Belt is affectionately referred to as the Fun Belt by degenerate gamblers that love weekday action from the conference. The Sun Belt has been anything but fun for the Troy Trojans this week and it’s probably not going to be a whole lot of fun this week either. The Trojans take on the Georgia Southern Eagles and all of the money has come in on the favorite so far this week.

Larry Blakeney’s final season at Troy has been a tough one. The Trojans are just 1-7 straight up, but some very negative perception has allowed them to cover in three of their last four games. The Trojans are 4-4 ATS on the season. Georgia Southern, under first-year head coach Willie Fritz, is 6-2 straight up and 7-1 against the spread. They are 3-0 ATS at home.
Troy Trojans:
The Troy Trojans were the class of the Sun Belt for a while just a few years ago, but the program has really fallen on some hard times and head coach Larry Blakeney seems to be getting out at the right time. Blakeney announced earlier this season that he would retire following the 2014 campaign and it’s likely for the best. Troy is losing by an average of more than 20 points per game this season and they are just 15-29 since the start of the 2011 season. It’s clear that there’s simply a lack of talent on this Troy team. Fourteen different players have registered a rushing attempt and 21 different players have caught a pass. Troy is averaging less than four yards per carry and just 6.6 yards per pass attempt. There’s no explosiveness on this offense and that has been exacerbated by a defense that has allowed 39 points per game. One of Troy’s losses this season is to FCS member Abilene Christian and several of their losses are very lopsided.
Georgia Southern Eagles:
It’s not going to get a whole lot of attention because most fans don’t care about the Sun Belt Conference, but Willie Fritz is an early favorite for Coach of the Year. Fritz, who came over from Sam Houston State when Jeff Monken took the job at Army, has navigated the Eagles to a 6-2 record in their first season as a FBS member. To put the Eagles’ season into perspective, their two losses are a one-point loss to NC State and a three-point loss to Georgia Tech. They’ve scored 40 rushing touchdowns and have averaged 7.4 yards per carry. When they do throw, they’re picking up 16.6 yards per completion. Having such a productive running game has helped the defense. They have only allowed 22.3 points per game. This is a team that beat Florida last season as a 28-point underdog.
Free Pick: Georgia Southern -26
Troy can’t match the explosiveness of the Georgia Southern offense and there’s a decent chance that the team has quit on the season after finding out that their coach is bailing on them. Troy has really fallen on some difficult times and this could be the crescendo – a blowout loss to a first-year FBS member. The Trojans are giving up 39 points per game and GSU has a season high of 83 points against Savannah State. This game has the potential to get out of hand very early.
